| One of the
genus that we like very much is Arisaema. It belongs to Araceae, and
wears in Danish the name (directly translated) "Trunk calla", which refer
to the calla-looking flower, that nearly has a form like a hoot. The upper part of the flower or the inflorescence often ends in a tale or thread looking tip. At some species this "tale" can be more than 1 m. |
The
distribution of Arisaema is centred to Yunnan, the Himalaya area and the
temperate part of E. Asia, but also in N. America and Mexico Arisaema is
represented. In addition there is some tropical species which don't have our big interest. The American species are the easiest to grow by us, but the Chinese and the Japanese are the most exiting. |
The root is a
tuber, and the small roots often grow out from the upper site. The tube must be planted deep, and with a very good drainage to avoid rotting in our wet winters, with the changing between frost and thaw. Most Arisaemas grow in woods in rock areas, and like half shade, but they don't damage by more sun. At the moment we grow about 50 species in our garden. |
